The Next Big Thing Blog Hop

The Next Big Thing Blog Hop is a way to learn about an author’s current project and be led to other authors and their work. Each tagged author answers the following set of ten questions about their newest or upcoming release.

What is the [working] title of your book?
"Red" was published by eKensington in September, and it's been getting some very good reviews.  People are already asking, "Are you going to write about these characters again?" They want to know more about Gina and Hanson, and there's definitely at least one sequel beginning to simmer in my brain. The ending of "Red" was pretty twisted, and leaves some unanswered questions.

How did you come by the idea?
I've published vanilla fiction under another name, but I'd thought about writing something kinky for some time. I get so tired of seeing the words "sadist" and "serial killer" linked, so I wanted to write something where the perverts get to be the good guys for a change.

What genre does your book fall under?
Some people somehow got the idea that "Red" was an erotic romance, but it's definitely NOT. "Red" is a thriller set in the BDSM community. Yes, there's some hot sex but there's also a gritty and gory string of murders being investigated. Imagine Hannibal Lector meets Christian Grey... and eats him.

One reader said "Red" reminded her a lot of the movie "Seven." I hope so, because "Seven" was a lot of things I admire: dark, scary, exciting, and surprising.

Which actors would you choose to play your characters if it were a movie?
Picture
My first choice for Gina, the former detective turned dominatrix, is Angelina Jolie. She's not just gorgeous and sexy, but she's got that power of presence that Gina has to have. She can also portray such complexity and vulnerability.

But if Ms. Jolie is busy, I'd be thrilled with Kate Beckinsale, too.

Though both she and Ms. Jolie would have to go red.

As Tom Hanson.... well, that's tougher. But I think Bradley Cooper could do a fine job.

As John Griggs — the equal opportunity, knuckle-dragging bigot — I'd love to see Robert Downey Jr. I suspect he could do a very good Columbo impression. But, does he like cats? 'Cause that's important.

What is the one-sentence synopsis of your book?
If I could write a one-sentence synopsis, I wouldn't need to write a whole book. But I'll try: A serial killer stalking the BDSM community forces Detective Tom Hanson to seek help from his former lover and partner, Gina Larsen, who left the force in disgrace when her secret life as a dominatrix was revealed.... and things get hot and rather bloody.

Will your book be self-published or traditional?
"Red" was published in Sept. by eKensington, and they are also interested in the sequel.

How long did it take you to write the first draft of your manuscript?
The first draft was very fast — for me — about two months. The rewrites took nearly a year.

What other books would you compare this story to within your genre?
I can't think of any book like this one, though it's closer to James Patterson than EL James.

Who or What inspired you to write this book?

Simply wanting to write a good thriller that would keep people guessing and make their hearts beat a little faster. Oh, honestly, there was somebody I wanted to kill, and figured this was the safest way to do it. <evil grin>

What else about your book might pique the reader's interest?
The murders are really gory, the sex is really hot, and it's actually got some really funny bits in it.

To keep this party flowing, we tag the awesome Holly Roberts.  Be sure to take a gander at what she’s got in the works!
